Edit a PDF in Word without retyping it

PDFs are great for sharing, but hard to edit. Converting a PDF to Word gives you a .docx file you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice and change freely — fix a typo in a contract, update an old CV or reuse text from a report without retyping everything.

Rebuilding an editable document from a PDF is heavy work, so this tool works differently from our in-browser tools. Your file is sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our own server in Germany (EU), converted, sent back to you and deleted immediately. It is never stored, never shared and never used for anything else. Files can be up to 50 MB. The converter reconstructs paragraphs, headings, tables and images so the Word file stays close to the original layout.

It works best with text-based PDFs, the kind exported from Word or another program. Scanned PDFs are just pictures of pages; we don't run OCR, so their text won't be editable. Very complex layouts with many columns, text boxes or unusual fonts may shift a little, so give the result a quick check before sending it on. Need the reverse? Our take

We convert PDF to Word when a document has to be edited and the original source is gone: an old CV, a contract template someone only sent as PDF, or a letter that needs a few changed paragraphs.

This conversion is one of the few that uploads the file, to our server in Germany over HTTPS, and it is deleted immediately after the result comes back. We accept that because layout reconstruction is far better with a proper engine than in a browser.

The pitfall: a scanned PDF has no text to convert, so Word receives images. Run OCR PDF first. Complex layouts with columns and text boxes may need tidying afterwards. If you only want to change a word or two, editing the source file or retyping may honestly be faster.
